Waterbased Finishes

Waterbased Finishes at their Best

Sandman Floors officially signed off of oil based polyurethanes in 1991 and was somewhat of a pioneer when it came to waterbased polyurethanes. We made the change due to a number of reasons, one of which was the combustable nature of the laquer sealer that was used in addition to oil based polyurethanes. One member of our family was involved in a serious explosion caused from vapor buildup and a spark produced from a running refrigerator ignited the vapors and literally blew the roof off the house in which he was working. All precautions were taken care of like turning out all pilot lights in the home. It just goes to show you that the tiniest spark like the one that emerges from a refrigerator can cause serious accidents.

Waterbase finishes today provide you with all the benefits of a traditional top quality oil finish to go with fast dry times, very low odor and low VOC and water clean-up. Most of the finishes are available in satin, semi-gloss, and gloss.

We use a few different waterbased finishes depending upon the needs of the customer. Streetshoe and EMULSION by Basic Coatings are the clear choices of Sandman Floors.

Emulsion is a self sealing oxidatively crosslinked urethane system.  It has the look of an oil based finish providing you with rich, warm, amber tones. It has outstanding durability, superior scuff and chemical resistance...the look of oil with the advantages of water.

The fasted curing finish on the market, Streetshoe is the benchmark for waterbase finishes. Ideal for all sports, commercial and residential applications.

6 Advantages for using Basic Coatings Water Base Finish

1. More Durable

Basic Coatings products were tested with a Taber Abrasion machine. This test determines a coatings' resistance to abrasion. Resistance to abrasion is defined as the ability of a coating to withstand mechanical action such as scuffing or erosion.

2. Less Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's)

VOC are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. These gases can have adverse health effects. They also combine with other elements in the presence of sunlight to form smog, a major air pollutant. The government has begun restricting the amount of VOC's that can be included in certain products.

3. Faster Dry Times

Multiple coats of waterbased finish can be applied in one day. The coating job will take less time and the floor can be back in use faster.

4. Faster Cure Times

StreetShoe® is the fastest curing finish on the market. Both are 90% cured in 24 hours. This means less downtime and you can be back on the floor faster. It also means that the VOC is removed from the floor faster.

5. Less Yellowing

Waterbased finishes will retain a clear non-yellowing appearance. OMU (Oil modified urethanes) finishes may turn to an unsightly yellow appearance over time.

6. Non-Flammable

OMU's (oil modified urethanes)contain petroleum distillants, which are combustible or flammable. Waterbased finishes are not combustible nor flammable. OMU's need you to blow out all pilot lights before application of finish.
